For their new participation in TEFAF Maastricht, French dealers Oscar Graf and Lucas Ratton will be joining forces for the duration of the fair to offer visitors the excellence of their speciality and an unprecedented artistic confrontation between late 19th-century European Decorative Arts and Early African Arts. Their ambition ? To reveal objects of great formal beauty and surprising modernity in a new light. A perfect aesthetic fusion concentrated in a shared showcase designed by architect René Bouchara as a cabinet of high curiosity. Beembe fetishes, Senoufo masks and an exceptional Gouro mask from Maurice de Vlaminck's collection will be displayed alongside works by leading European artists such as Christopher Dresser and Armand Point.
While their long-standing friendship was not the driving force behind their collaboration, it does reflect a shared vision of beauty and quality that had already been tried and tested in their gallery, where the two dealers had experimented with this dialogue. ‘This project was born above all out of a desire to develop our practices and offer collectors a new experience,’ explains Lucas Ratton. For Oscar Graf, this approach embodies a proposal at the crossroads between tradition and new ways of collecting. It illustrates what art lovers are looking for today in terms of eclecticism. The joint ambition of the two dealers is perfectly reflected at TEFAF, a major meeting place for prestigious institutions and discerning art lovers. By adopting this innovative approach, they hope to make a lasting impression on visitors and collectors alike.
